Children from Shinewater are being treated to a free picnic in the park every week in the summer holidays, thanks to an Eastbourne Homes initiative.
Sarah Roberts, Neighbourhood Caseworker at Eastbourne Homes, and Ann-Marie Cox, who is Pupil & Parent Support Manager at Shinewater Primary School, came up with the idea.
The pair secured sponsorship from Langney Co-op and Tesco and the shops supply a range of sandwiches, cakes, fruit and drinks. So far, around 30 parents and children have taken part each week.
The picnic is in Shinewater Park, off Larkspur Drive, every Wednesday at 12 noon and most children then take part in the free sports sessions run by Eastbourne Borough Council.
Irene Smithers, Community Champion at Langney Tesco, said, “We think it’s such a good cause. There’s talk about rolling it out to all schools in Eastbourne and I think it would be great for every Tesco to take on their local school.”
Vice-Chair of Eastbourne Homes, Sheilah Roberts, said, “This is a brilliant initiative to work with the primary school aged children. We’re thrilled to be supporting the scheme and it’s great to see so many children out in the park and using the facilities in the summertime.”
