With both the RMT Union and Southern willing to resume talks – on their own grounds – to try and end the bitter dispute over the introduction of driver-only trains, it seems it’s too late for Airbourne.
Even if the Union were to suspend the industrial action planned for tomorrow and Friday, Southern Rail have told Eastbourne Buzz it is too late to change the system, meaning the strike timetable would still have to run. The row over driver-only trains is on passenger safety grounds, which the RMT say will be compromised if it's brought in as planned in 11 days' time.
Airbourne is the town’s flagship event and is worth millions to Eastbourne’s economy. The Borough Council is opening up additional car parks to the east of Sovereign Harbour on Friday and Saturday only. Meanwhile, Stagecoach Buses will be laying on extra services from Hastings and Brighton and Hove Buses will be providing extra services from Brighton.
