One lane of the A22 is likely to remain shut until tomorrow (17 August) between Polegate and Hailsham following last night’s fire at PJ Skips.
The northbound carriageway has been closed at Cophall Roundabout to allow East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to make the site safe.
Two crews and an officer are still at the scene, which at its height had eight pumping appliances, along with two water bowsers from Uckfield and Burgess Hill and the aerial ladder platform from Hastings.
Incident Commander Andy Gausden said, “We are working hard to ensure that this fire is completely out. This is going to take some time due to the nature and size of the site. We are making good progress and would like to thank the public for their patience.
“An investigation will take place to find out how the fire started. At the moment, we do not believe it is suspicious.”
One of the owners of PJ Skips, Nick Ellwood, has told Eastbourne Buzz he hopes to reopen for business tomorrow, whilst one of his workers told us they are all behind Nick and aim to do all they can to help ensure they are back open as soon as possible.
