Yet more strike action could hit commuters in Eastbourne.
Today (19 August), the TSSA Union began balloting ticket office and platform staff at Southern over plans alter the way ticket offices are run, which the Union says would close or partially close over 80 ticket offices and axe over 40 staff. Both Eastbourne and Polegate Railways Stations have been named as sites being looked at for modernisation. The result of the ballot will be announced on September 2.
Manuel Cortes, general secretary of the TSSA, said, "We cannot stand by and allow GTR to reduce Southern Railway to a second class operation which is not fit for passengers and staff.
"Passengers have suffered enough over the past few months and it is now time for Chris Grayling to act. GTR should be stripped off this franchise and it should be handed over to the publicly run Transport for London as Sadiq Khan has suggested.
"Then we will have a publicly run franchise which will be operating in the public interest, not in the interest of private shareholders."
Govia Thameslink Rail, which runs Southern, say their plans will allow staff to provide a better customer service to passengers.
