The Eastbourne Men’s Town Bowls competitions reached the semi-final stages played at Parade BC over last weekend.
The competitions, sponsored for several years by Decorators Warehouse, have been running through the season and will culminate in the finals next weekend at Royal Sovereign BC.
The ‘Blue Riband’ Croal Singles saw fellow club members Andrew Albon and Andy Browning (Gildredge Park BC) in a titanic struggle lasting 26 ends. It was Andrew who sank with Andy getting 2 shots on the last end to win 21-17.The other semi saw veteran Derek Wells (Victoria Drive & EBL BC) pitted against Shane Packham (Eastbourne BC). Derek found the green to his liking and ran out a comfortable winner 21-10.
Andrew Albon also featured in the Lifeboat Singles where he met another club mate, Henry Knowles. Andrew established an early lead but then lost 6 ends in a row leaving the score all square 16-16 after 17 ends. Henry took a slender advantage 18-17 after 19 ends but Andrew finished victorious scoring 3 and 4 to take the match. Andrew meets Mike Taylor (Eastbourne BC) in the final, Mike having defeated competitions organiser Ian Bratthammer (Royal Sovereign BC) 21-14 in a convivial, but hard fought match.
The Nyewater Pairs final will be an all Eastbourne BC affair, Colin Greenaway and Colin Dunne having beaten P Goodwin and J Smith (Motcombe Gardens BC) 22-15, Mike Dooley and Francois Celada triumphing over the Hampden Park BC pairing of Roger Grout and Ian Scantlebury 24-20.
In the Veteran Pairs Don Kent and Brian Henty (Victoria Drive and EBL BC) beat the Eastbourne BC pairing of Bill Fuller and Roger Cable 16-11 after picking up 4 shots on the last end played. Don and Brian will meet Geoff Owen and Tony Huggett in the final after they beat the Motcombe Gardens BC pairing of Brian Beere and Malcolm Fuller 19-14 also picking up 4 shots on the last end. In the Alice Hudson Triples semis, the host club trio of J Stewart, Roger Cavie and David Pocock (Parade BC) had a walk over when their opponents from St Johns BC were unable to play.
The other semi saw the Eastbourne BC trio of Rod Lewis, Simon Perry and Shane Packham victorious over the Hampden Park BC trio of Ian Scantlebury, Fred Titchener and Roger Grout 25-4. In the Towner Rinks, there will be an all Eastbourne BC final after Mike Taylor’s rink of Peter Jackson, Andy Stanley and Mike Dooley beat the Hampden Park BC team of Ian Scantlebury, Roger Grout and Geoff Owen, skipped by Tony Huggett 22-16 and Rod Addison’s team of Bob Benstead, Brian Large and Bob Palmer defeated the Motcombe Gardens BC rink of Paul Goodwin, Tony Flemming, Geoff Barnard and John Smith 26-17. Organiser Ian Bratthammer thanked Parade BC for hosting the event and Decorators Warehouse for their sponsorship. Finals commence Saturday morning (3 September) at 10.00am.
