The Eastbourne Mens Town Bowls competitions finals were played at Royal Sovereign BC over last weekend. The ‘Blue Riband’ Croall Singles saw Andy Browning (Gildredge Park BC) take on veteran Derek Wells (Victoria Drive & EBL BC). Early exchanges were even with the score 9-9 after 14 ends.
In an enthralling encounter Andy managed to edge away to lead 15-10 after 18 ends but Derek replied taking 7 shots from the next 2 ends to lead 17-15. Andy responded, taking 4 of the next 5 ends played to lead 20-18, but it was Derek with 3 shots on the last end (the 26th) who scored the 3 shots he required to take the game and the title 21-20. comfortable winner 21-10.
Andrew Albon (Gildredge Park BC) featured in the Lifeboat Singles final where he met Mike Taylor (Eastbourne BC). Andrew raced to a 13-1 lead after 8 ends. Mike rallied and narrowed the deficit to 13-7 after12 ends but Andy then took a maximum 4 shots on the next end and after 19 ends needed only 1 more shot – leading 20-11. Despite Mike winning the next 4 ends and closing the gap to 20-18, it was Andy who emerged victorious picking up the required shot to take the game and title 21-18 after 24 ends. The Nyewater Pairs final was an all Eastbourne BC affair, Colin Greenaway and Colin Dunne playing Mike Dooley and Francois Celada.
In a high scoring game, it was Mike and Francois who found the tricky green more to their liking and the two Colins conceded after 17 ends with the score 31-16. In the Veteran Pairs final, Don Kent and Brian Henty (Victoria Drive and Eastbourne Ladies BC) beat the Hampden Park BC pairing of Geoff Owen and Tony Huggett after taking the lead on the 8th end 7-6 they were never headed and despite spirited opposition ran out winners 19-15.
The Mixed Pairs was another all Eastbourne BC final when Pauline and Peter Jackson played Sandra Richardson and Rod Addison. After picking up 6 shots on the 11th end to lead 15-8 Sandra and Rod could only manage 1 more end and in a dramatic turn-around it was Pauline and Peter who took the title 25-16. In the Alice Hudson Triples, the Parade BC trio of Jim Stewart, Roger Cavie and David Pocock met the Eastbourne BC trio of Rod Lewis, Simon Perry and Shane Packham. After 8 ends it was the Parade team that led 9-5 but they could only win 2 more ends and it was the Eastbourne BC trio who ran our victors18-13. The Mixed Triples title went to the Eastbourne BC team of Barrie Fordham, Julia Fordham and Colin Dunne who were never headed in their game against the Hampden Park BC trio of Dorothy Buxton, Ken Limage and Alan Glenister, winning 20-10.
In the Towner Rinks, there was yet another all Eastbourne BC final when Mike Taylor’s rink of Peter Jackson, Andy Stanley and Mike Dooley beat their clubmate Rod Addison’s team of Bob Benstead, Brian Large and Bob Palmer 23-12. The Tolley Bowl was won by Gildredge Park BC ‘A’ who beat Eastbourne BC ‘B’ by 7 shots, 39-32 aggregate over the 2 rinks. Prizes and Trophies were presented by Andy Browning (on behalf of Sponsors Decorators Warehouse) Retiring Organiser Ian Bratthammer thanked Royal Sovereign BC for hosting the event and Decorators Warehouse for their continuing sponsorship.
