It looks like the gold domes could be here to stay on Eastbourne Pier.
Planners at the Borough Council will consider a retrospective application about work done to the Grade II* listed building next week.
Historic England say that although the work to paint the camera obscurer and other domes gold have damaged the landmark’s historic character and appearance, they wouldn’t object to it remaining, providing the last two grey domes are not touched and the gold roof over the restaurant be painted a neutral colour immediately.
The application also includes the painting of lion detailing on 49 lampposts on the pier, which are also be expected to be allowed to stay.
Permission is expected to be granted at a meeting next Tuesday (20 September), with the conditions that the owner Abid Gulzar doesn’t carry out any further painting work on the pier without first seeking and obtaining the correct authority to do so.
