It’s D-Day for Eastbourne Pier, as planners decide whether or not the gold domes can stay.
Owner, Abid Gulzar has put in for retrospective permission for paint work carried out on the camera obscurer, several domes and lion detailing on 49 lampposts on the Grade II* listed building.
It’s widely expected that the gold will be allowed to stay, with Historic England saying that although the work has damaged the landmark’s historic character and appearance, they wouldn’t object, providing the last two grey domes are not touched and the gold roof over the restaurant is painted a neutral colour immediately. The latter condition has already been met, with the roof now white.
Mr Gulzar is expected to be told tonight (20 September), that whilst his beloved gold paint can stay, he won’t be allowed to carry out any further painting work on the pier, without first seeking and obtaining the proper permissions to do so.
