950 years ago today (28 September) William of Normandy landed at Pevensey Bay with a fleet of some 700 men.

It’s believed they took shelter in within the Roman walls of Pevensey castle before marching east, where William was to challenge King Harold II to the English thrown, believing he’d been promised the crown by Edward the Confessor.

From Pevensey Bay, William led his soldiers to Battle, where they awaited the Saxon army, which had already been fighting at the Battle of Stamford Bridge and were exhausted. The Normans waited until 14 October, when the 1066 Battle of Hastings took place, seeing King Harold mortally wounded by an arrow through the eye.
