Conservatives in Eastbourne are speaking out after the Department for Communities and Local Government rejected the Borough Council’s proposals to amend the bylaw to permit cycling on the promenade.
One of the major concerns was that a comprehensive cycling and walking strategy should be put in place by the council first.
The Conservative Group on the Borough Council have long been calling for an integrated strategy and welcome this decision for further thinking agreeing that an integrated strategy would be best for Eastbourne to properly represent all users of the seafront.
Cllr Barry Taylor said, "Our group put a motion to a full council meeting in November last year, asking the council to pause any lifting of the bylaw before an integrated cycling and walking strategy was in place. We want more people cycling in the town, however this must be part of an integrated transport system rather than using a sticking plaster approach the doesn't take into account the views of pedestrians and vulnerable people. Put simply the LibDem administration have mismanaged the situation."
The Conservative Councillors want all groups to come together to find a sustainable long term solution for cycling in our town that protects the vulnerable too.
