A by-election’s to be held in Sovereign Harbour, after Councillor Ray Blakebrough announced his resignation today (6 October).

Notice has now been given of a vacancy for a Borough Councillor for Sovereign Ward, with a replacement due to be elected on 24 November. Whoever fills the seat, will serve the area until May 2019.

Mr Blakebrough, who was elected to serve as a Conservative Borough Councillor in May 2015, said,

“Purely and simply my circumstances have changed since this time two years ago when I first agreed to become councillor. The sum of work carried out has become greater than the time I have available particularly evenings.

"I hope to continue my work helping vulnerable people through the Eastbourne DAG, DIG and Afoot. I will also remain an active member of the Sovereign Harbour Residents Association where I am a committee member and intend to continue the campaign for a community centre to be built in the heart of the community.”

Leader of the Eastbourne Conservative Group, Tony Freebody said, “Ray is a brilliant local councillor, who has worked hard for the area he served. I am sorry to see him step down.”

Sovereign Harbour Residents Association Chairman, Jan Weeks, said, “This is very sad news, Ray was a very active member of the council and very supportive of our campaigns to secure the social infrastructure so desperately needed in Sovereign Harbour."

Although he will be sorely missed as a councillor, Ray has indicated that he will continue to serve as a member of the SHRA committee.”
