An Eastbourne charity shop’s getting in the mood for half term fun.
Chestnut Tree’s shop in Terminus Road is hosting a fun day on Wednesday (26 October) between 10am-4pm. It’s an opportunity to find out more about retail volunteer opportunities, have a browse around the shop and join in the fun.
Visit the shop on Terminus Road to meet their friendly real-life inflatable pirate, and guess his name for 50p a go. There’ll also be a visit from Chestnut Tree mascot, Chester Bear. There are lots of other activities for children including face painting, a lucky dip and a tombola for everyone, with some fantastic prizes.
Chestnut Tree are delighted to have The Worshipful the Mayor of Eastbourne, Cllr Pat Hearn, joining them on the day. She will be judging the children’s colouring competition, with prizes awarded in two age categories: under 7 years, and 7 years and over. Colouring sheets are now available and entries are to be in by 12 noon on the fun day, Wednesday 26 October.
Volunteers play a vital role in keeping the busy shop running, and the charity are asking anybody interested in joining the friendly team to put their Hands Up!
In return for a few hours commitment each week Chestnut Tree are offering transferable skills, a supportive team, new friends, valuable experience and lots of laughs. At the fun day there will be lots of information about the various roles on offer, as well as the opportunity to chat to some of the current volunteers.
One such volunteer is Farzana, who is 18, and who wanted to get some retail work experience. She says, “I enjoy the role, working on the till, tidying the shop floor and steaming the clothes which have been donated. Volunteering in the shop really helps with my confidence, it’s good to meet different people. I’d like to get a paid job and hope this could be a stepping stone to work.”
June has been volunteering for 5 years in the shop and says, “I wanted to give something back to the community after retiring and moving to Eastbourne. You meet some really nice people, and I enjoy the banter with the customers and other volunteers.”
The shop stocks everything you would expect including ladieswear and accessories, children’s clothes, toys, games, puzzles, books and bric-a-brac. They also have a large selection of menswear and accessories. The shop is known for its eye-catching window displays. Customers have noted in the shop comments book that manager, Denise, and her team, ‘provide excellent customer service’ and ‘the window display is the best in the town!’
If you would like to put your Hands Up to volunteer at the Eastbourne shop please call 01323 725095 or email firstname.lastname@example.org. If you are unable to volunteer, staff at the shop would like to encourage you to please donate anything that you no longer need, as they are always looking for more items to sell to raise vital funds for the hospice.
