There are calls that the Prime Minister is a hypocrite in Eastbourne, over plans to back a third runway at Heathrow Airport.
Eastbourne and District Friends of the Earth have spoken of their disappointment in Theresa May and the Government’s decision to expand the airport.
Spokesperson Andrew Durling said, “I am extremely shocked, disappointed and saddened, especially as Theresa May, once upon a time, was in opposition to the expansion of Heathrow so she’s been very hypocritical in going back on her opposition to Heathrow.
“Once again ‘growth at any cost’ is the mantra of this government regardless of the fact that ‘growth at any cost’ is costing us the planet.
“It’s a sad day for not only the residents around Heathrow but for the country as a whole, because the expansion of Heathrow will mean the country will almost certainly breach its climate change commitments as set by the Climate Change Act.
“At a time when climate change is accelerating dangerously the last thing we should be doing is allowing the aviation industry to expand. The carbon emissions from aviation is rising fast and there is no alternative to aviation fuel so demand management is essential to keep aviation industry emissions down.
“Friends of the Earth and the Green Party are both in favour of a frequent flyer levy for those who fly more than 3 times a year to pay for the environmental damage they are causing. Without this kind of thing, we will see emissions from aviation spiralling out of control, which is particularly bad for Eastbourne because, as I’ve said many times before, Eastbourne is particularly vulnerable to climate change impact because of the rapid rise in sea level that will happen over the next few decades. So, it’s in the interests of everyone living in Eastbourne to try to keep aviation expansion down.”
