Pevensey’s MP is calling for an independent review into Southern Rail’s proposals for driver only operations.
Huw Merriman has made the request to the Transport Select Committee, which has conducted its own review into the safety of Southern’s plans. The Rail Regulator has said he will consider Mr Merriman’s request.
The rail company has been locked in a bitter dispute with guards over the introduction of the system, which will see conductors replaced with on board supervisors. The row has resulted in the RMT Union calling numerous strike days, with more due to hit commuters later this month.
The RMT say driver only will be detrimental to passenger safety, something Southern strongly deny.
