Eleven Law students from Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne, took part in South East Regional Heat of the Bar National Mock Trial Competition at Maidstone Crown Court last week. The heat was made up of 12 schools and colleges from across the region. Sussex Downs College beat independent schools and grammar schools to win the Regional Heat and have secured a place at the National Final, to be held at the Royal Courts of Justice in London in March 2017.
“This was the first time that Sussex Downs College has entered the competition, and I am pleased that our students have acquitted themselves in the very best manner possible,” says Fritha Watson, Law Course Coordinator at the College. “They were excellent barristers and witnesses, court clerks, ushers and members of the jury, and displayed a professional, respectful approach to the competition and their competitors.”
The Sussex Downs College students were presented with trophies and a cheque for £100, provided by the Senior Judge at Maidstone Crown Court.
The students involved were: Jodie Lindley, Jakub Szewczynski, Jamie Hollywood, Megan-Marie Love, Beatrice Wheatley, Catherine Mears, Ana Resende, Cameron Apted, Mary Sturrock, Tyler Boakes and Rebekah Hadland
Rebekah, who is studying A Level Law and Fine Art, will also be entering the Court Artist Competition, which is run alongside the Mock Trial and has a separate closing date in December.
