A talented Eastbourne teenager has raised more than £350 for his community after bowling non-stop for 12 hours.

Kiran Akehurst, a Year 11 pupil at St Catherine’s College, bowled from 9am until 9pm at The Lanes in Hampden Park to raise money for Eastbourne Youth Bowling Club and West Rise Primary School.

The lad is celebrating his tenth season at Eastbourne Youth Bowling Club and is currently at the top of the British Ten Pin Bowling Association’s Under 16 rankings.

During the fundraiser, Kiran bowled a total of 43 games, despite suffering from painful blisters which appeared half way through. Friends and family supported Kiran and he was delighted to receive a good luck message from Dom Barrett, one of England's top ten pin bowlers.

St Catherine’s College Principal, Mark Talbot, said, “We’re very proud of Kiran for his bowling achievements. I understand he's been involved in 12 hour group bowling fundraisers before, but this is the first time he’s gone solo and we applaud him for that as it can’t have been easy.”

Kiran has bowled with the Eastbourne Youth Bowling Club for 10 years and wanted to give something back. He would like to become a primary school teacher and enjoyed his work experience at West Rise School so much that he wanted to show his appreciation for them, too.

He started bowling aged 5, when his dad Andy started taking him after school. Andy could see how much Kiran liked it, so signed him up for Eastbourne Youth Bowling Club, where he has remained ever since.

Kiran has played for Sussex for four years and has done exceptionally well this year, playing for the Under 16s, Under 18s and the Under 21s.

Andy said, “Kiran had great support from other Eastbourne Youth Bowling Club bowlers and parents and his school friends played on the lane next to him for part of the fundraiser. Special thanks to ex-Eastbourne Youth Bowling Club bowler, Alex Castle, who helped him control the blisters, and Kiran's coach and On The Ball Pro Shop owner, Michael Rich, who has helped him tremendously.

“We were pleased that Kiran's science teacher, Miss Haggart, also came and played a couple of games with him and the final amount raised was £364,” Andy added.

The bowling event was co-sponsored by Swift Driver Training and ButterCups Cupcake Co. For more information about Eastbourne Youth Bowling Club, please call Andy on 0788 795 5077.
