The A27 between Polegate and Drusillas Roundabout is likely to remain shut for several hours, after a crash at Wilmington this morning.
A red Nissan Almera and a silver BMW 3 Series collided on Lewes Road at the junction with the A27 at 5.45am. Two fire engines from Eastbourne were called to the scene and freed one person using hydraulic equipment.
The driver of the Nissan has been taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious injuries and two other people have been treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the scene.
The A22 is heavily congested and the A259 coast road is also seeing traffic build up, with long queues reported on all alternative routes. Some buses are being delayed as a result of the level of traffic.
Anyone who saw what happened is asked to email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 101, quoting Operation Hayfield.
