eastbourne buzz news - Will Scott Hmp

Former Level 3 Public Uniformed Service (PUS) student, Will Scott, 19 from Eastbourne, visited the Eastbourne campus of Sussex Downs College last month (30th November). Will finished his course in 2014 and now works for HMP. Over 50 PUS students were present for Will’s talk, which gave an insight into working for the Prison Service.

“The Prison Service is an often ‘forgotten’ uniformed service and has recently been receiving a lot of negative press,” says Bob Shoesmith, PUS Lecturer at SDC. “Will wanted the opportunity to talk about his role and the benefits of HMP as an employer. Also, the Ministry of Justice has announced they are recruiting another 2,100 prison officers over the next year, so Will was able to give our students advice on how to apply.”

In the interactive session at the College Will showed students a range of equipment used by Prison Officers and examples of items seized from prisoners. This event engaged the students and had them consider a career path they may not have first thought of.
