It was an early start for Eastbourne Lifeboats this morning (27 December).
Pagers went off 5.30am, calling for the Inshore boat to launch to reports of a fire on the beach near the Beachy Head Lighthouse, lights shining from the beach and a bag abandoned at the top of the cliffs.
The RNLI, along with coastguards and the coastguard helicopter sprang into action and found two professional abseilers on the beach, with ropes hanging down the cliffs. The pair had left a car and bag at the top and had lit a fire to cook breakfast, before they intended to walk to Birling Gap, where they had left a second car to drive back to Beachy Head.
After some persuasion, the men were taken to Birling Gap by the lifeboat crew, where they were met by coastguards and the police. They were very apologetic for all the bother they had caused.
