Ofcom’s proposed rule changes to all UK communications providers, aimed to protect vulnerable consumers, have been welcomed by Polegate MP Maria Caulfield.

This has come after an in-depth review- conducted by Ofcom - assessed the effectiveness of the rules in protecting consumers from harm and identified a number of areas where they believe strengthened regulation is needed to protect consumers.

The rule changes they have proposed include:

  • A requirement for all providers to have clear, effective policies and procedures for identifying vulnerable customers, such as those with learning difficulties or those suffering from mental or physical illness.
  • Providers to identify and block phone calls with an invalid number, in order to prevent nuisance calls. A joint-action plan with the Information Commissioner’s Office has also been launched to tackle this.
  • Regulation to strengthen complaint handling rules.
  • Providers of broadband and pay-TV to offer disabled users priority fault repair and third party bill management.

Maria commented, “These are sensible changes to protect the most vulnerable consumers, and are neither economically detrimental to the providers nor a burden on the regular consumer. I fully support these proposed rule changes.”
