Dog walkers are again being urged to keep their pets on a lead when walking on the cliff tops of Beachy Head and Belle Tout.
It follows the death of a spaniel at the weekend, which died when it chased a seagull and fell off the cliff.
Its owner, who was understandably distraught, contacted the emergency services, in the faint hope the dog had survived the fall. The team from Birling Gap Coastguard was paged and set up harnesses at the top of the cliffs and started a visual search for the animal, before the Inshore Lifeboat was launched. The animal’s body, was recovered from the surf and passed to coastguards at the steps of Birling Gap, to return it too its devastated owner.
