Eastbourne’s MP has given her reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling that MPs must be given a say on Britain’s exit from the EU.
It’s expected the issue will be brought before Parliament within days.
Caroline Ansell said, “This judgement will not hinder the Government’s plans to invoke Article 50 and leave the EU. My expectation is MPs will honour the referendum result and vote to start negotiations to leave within the Prime Minister’s timeframe of 31 March.
“In some ways, the judgement is helpful because it clarifies the situation and the roles for Government and Parliament, plus the position of the devolved nations too.
“When I speak to people in Eastbourne on Brexit, be they former remainers or leavers, the overwhelming majority urge that we move forward now. Nothing must be done by MPs to frustrate that process in the coming weeks.
“To that end, I will be fully supporting the Government in its work to implement last year's referendum result.”
