A petition to Save the Martello Field at Sovereign Harbour South is nearing half of its target.
The site is earmarked for 62 flats and 10 houses, which campaigners say will leave no area for walking alongside the area that is needed for sea defence work to be carried out. They say residents look after the area, which is the last green area in the South Harbour, by litter picking and would like to see it landscaped and planted to help show off the Martello Tower.
They’re hoping to get the Minister for Community and Social Care to intervene and overrule the council on the matter. They aim to get 1000 signatures of support and are nearing the 500 mark.
