Revenge porn is to be discussed between the Sussex Police and Crime Commissioner and the Sussex Police Chief Constable today (20 May).

It will be streamed live online between 1-3pm (scroll down to watch it live here).

Commenting ahead of the meeting, Mrs Bourne said:

"Following urgent contact from a concerned mother of one victim and widespread media coverage about victims of revenge porn feeling let down by Sussex Police, I will be asking the Chief Constable how many reported incidents of revenge pornography have been made in Sussex since it became a criminal offence and how many of these have resulted in charges?  I also want to know if Sussex Police’s decision to refer a reported incident to the Crown Prosecution Service differs when the victim is under 18 years of age.  Sussex Police have made significant investment in training for frontline officers to tackle domestic abuse, child sexual exploitation and female genital mutilation. However, I will be asking what the training plan for frontline officers looks likes for revenge porn and what Sussex Police and partners are doing to raise awareness and encourage reporting.

"During recent months I have become aware of a general perception that the police service is turning a "blind-eye” to cannabis possession both nationally and in Sussex, despite it remaining a Class B drug.  This is of concern to me given the correlation that exists between cannabis use, mental health issues and increased levels of anti-social behaviour and acquisitive crime.  On behalf of Sussex residents, I will be asking what different options are available to Sussex Police in how they deal with cannabis users; how many individuals have been charged and formally cautioned with possession of illegal substances in Sussex in the past year and how many of these charges specifically related to cannabis possession.

"It is Mental Health Awareness Week and this year the theme is about relationships and how a good relationship is essential to maintaining good mental health.  I will be asking how Sussex Police is supporting the week, what activities are planned and how Sussex Police is promoting the week to their staff”.

Other topics under discussion at the meeting include outstanding arrest warrants, non-emergency call handling-times and management of police information.
