Figures released by the independent Office for National Statistics (ONS) confirming that a record 31.4m people are now in work has been welcomed by Polegate MP, Maria Caulfield.
The figures also show that unemployment has remained at its lowest rate for eleven years, down by more than 900,000 since 2010, while wages grew by 2.6% over the last year.
Women in employment has also reached a record rate of 70%, with youth unemployment at 12.6%, its lowest level since 2005.
Welcoming the latest figures, Maria said, “These figures are most welcome, and are further proof of this Governments commitment to ensuring that Britain is a country that works for everyone, not just the privileged few.
“I particularly welcome figures locally for my constituency of Lewes, showing a drop in the number of claimants aged 18-24 in the past year. Our young people are the future of our communities and our country, and it is therefore vital that they receive the support required to build a life for themselves through work. This Government continues to prove its commitment to that aim, and I am pleased to support it.”
