Birling Gap Coastguards spent 9 hours helping in the search for a missing woman yesterday (3 March).
The team was called just before midday to help Newhaven Coastguard scour the coastline from Cuckmere Haven along to Seaford. Police, the police helicopter and Newhaven RNLI were also involved the search, which was expanded to Cow Gap once the tide had dropped far enough for a beach search to begin.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue helped to light the search, once the light started to fail.
The Birling Gap team was stood down at around 8pm and no one had been found.
Sadly, a body was recovered from a beach at Seaford this morning, which police believe to missing 54-year-old Maureen Jonas, from the town who had been reported as missing yesterday morning. A formal identification is yet to take place, but her family has been informed and her death is not being treated as suspicious.
