Eastbourne’s MP has spoken out following the climbdown over the sale of the freehold of the Downland farms.
The Borough Council reversed its decision to press ahead with the sale, following the result of the Eastbourne Review poll, which found the majority of those who took part, didn’t want to see the freehold sold.
Reacting to the news, Caroline Ansell said, “The argument around protection of the land had not been won and the consultation with local people was deeply flawed.
“Abandoning the proposal to sell the Downland farm freeholds was the only decision possible under these circumstances.
“This was always a much bigger decision than simple asset management and through the campaign to keep the Downlands in public ownership we've seen just how highly precious, how loved our beautiful natural environment is.”
