Congratulations to Eastbourne’s Bede’s Prep School’s U11 and U13 Boys’ and U13 Girls’ Hockey Teams for their victories last week in the Sussex County Championships for their respective year groups.

The U13 Girls were crowned Sussex Champions after a thrilling tournament that saw some great saves from goalkeeper Izzy Atherton and outstanding goals from Mimi Cisotti, Lizzie Morgan, Matilda Collins and Milly Trenaman. The team defended well with great shape and Katie Fenton, Lilly Hackett and Maddy Baldwin-Charles added to the speed in which we counter-attacked with intelligence aqnd purpose.

The girls drew one game against Burgess Hill but won all of their other matches, including a 4-0 victory against Claremont, a 10-0 victory against Blatchington and a tense 2-1 victory against St Andrew’s in the final.

The U13 boys meanwhile beat Claremont 7-1 and Battle Abbey 9-0 thanks to goals from Archie Lenham Charley Tucknott, Luke Hinchon, Freddie Loach, Josh Sudan and Kyle Woolsley.

Petch Lenham, Bede’s Prep School’s Head of Hockey, said of the boys’ approach, “The U13 boys got off to a slow start but soon began to move the ball and work hard for each other, scoring some good goals and defending with purpose.”

Last but not least, the U11 boys also won their County Championship and were undefeated in all of their matches throughout their tournament.

“The U11s played with pace and good possession, moving the ball quickly to outplay their opposition,” Ms Muxworthy Head of Games said.

All three teams will now compete at the South East Regional Heats at Woking Hockey Club, which will take place across the month of March.

“The combination of training expertise from Bede’s Director of Hockey and Wales’ National Ladies coach Mr Kevin Johnson, Bede’s Prep School’s Head of Hockey Mrs Petch Lenham, and their fellow coaches at Bede’s Mr Theo Dowse and Mr Patrick Skinner, enables to develop passion and skill in our young hockey players,” Ms Muxworthy added.

“I feel very privileged to have such a fusion of staff leading and coaching hockey at Bede’s Prep School, where all coaching is focused on long term development and a genuine love of playing.”
