Polegate MP, Maria Caulfield, in conjunction with the National Trading Standards Scams Team, has become a SCAMbassador.
Scams are the scourge of our communities. They are operated by criminals with the sole purpose of identifying and exploiting the vulnerable- namely, the elderly and mentally impaired. The average victim loses about £1000 to scams, but some have lost their homes, their life savings and many thousands of pounds.
As well as financial losses, feelings of vulnerability can have an overwhelming impact on many victims. Elderly victims, for example, are 2.4 times more likely to die or go into a care home than those who are not scammed. This inevitably leads to increased pressure on public services.
The NTS Scams Team, when it was founded, uncovered 106,000 possible victims on captured criminal target lists, also known as ‘suckers lists’. Further investigations have suggested that there are 750,000 victims in circulation and many more are anticipated.
Maria’s role as a SCAMbassador is to be a Westminster representative of those who have been scammed. She will use her profile to help raise awareness of this issue, as well as employing dedication and her skill set to assist in the combating of scamming.
Maria commented, “I am very honoured to be able to be a SCAMbassador. I feel it my duty to help protect the vulnerable in our community, especially the elderly and mentally impaired.
“It is clear that more needs to be done in order to prevent these scams, and I hope that my exposure in Westminster may help this struggle.”
