Eastbourne MP Caroline Ansell has met with apprentices taking part in courses at the town’s Grand Hotel.
Caroline visited as part Apprenticeship Week, which took place last week, and met up with apprentice chef Ella Burgess and bar supervisor Harry Thorpe.
Harry explained that he started as a casual worker and then the hotel offered him the opportunity to go on an apprenticeship partnered with Sussex Downs College.
Caroline also met Oliver Smith, who started out as an apprentice at The Grand five years ago, and has now returned as Sous Chef in the hotel's Mirabelle Restaurant.
“The hospitality industry in Eastbourne is a big opportunity for young people to learn skills that will allow them to travel the world and forge a great career and I was inspiring to hear some of success stories,” said Caroline.
“It’s clear the Grand is committed to apprenticeships and has done so for 17 years giving scores of young people experience, the chance to study and obtain good qualifications.
"After talking to the executive head chef Keith Mitchell, it was clear the hotel knows that offering apprenticeships is a very effective way of retaining great staff, particularly in an industry with traditionally a high turnover, and I commend them for their work and the partnership with Sussex Downs College.”
