East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is celebrating after being shortlisted for an innovation award.

The Service’s “Safety in Action” programme is in the running for an award in the annual Improvement & Efficiency Awards (iESE), which is open to any public body in England, Wales, Scotland and Nothern Ireland, as well as their partners in the voluntary, community and private sector. This not-for-profit organisation is run by the sector, for the sector. It holds the awards to help share best practice, hear the stories of success and recognise public sector staff for what they describe as tireless efforts.

The iESE says that now more than ever public services face continued diminishing budgets alongside other pressures.

The iESE works with public sector organisations up and down the country and acknowledges that despite the enormous pressures, there is some excellent, innovative, ground-breaking work going on.

It believes that the sector deserves to be recognised and the sector needs to hear from those with good practice to share.

East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service submitted details of its innovative county wide “Safety in Action” programme which caught the attention of the panel.

This multi-agency programme has become a huge success in schools across East Sussex and the City of Brighton & Hove.

The week-long event gives hundreds of children in their final year at primary school the opportunity to practice dealing with emergency situations and how to keep themselves safe.

The children take part in interactive safety scenarios provided by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, Network Rail and British Transport Police, Wave Leisure, Sussex Downs College and UK Power Network, and has proven a huge hit with kids and welcomed by schools.

Head of Community Safety, David Kemp, is delighted East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is in the top-three nominations, “We will find out on the 4th of April who the winners are but the key thing for us is taking pride in the fact that the programme has been recognised.

“Shortly, we will be taking part in an innovation sharing workshop in London to share more detail of the programme and it will feature in the iESE innovations publication.

“This is not only fantastic news for our staff and volunteers but also for our partners and the wider community who we serve and this demonstrates how passionate we are about keeping young people safe.”
