A man’s fallen from cliffs at Baileys Hill near Birling Gap this afternoon (22 May).
Newhaven Lifeboat was launched at 2.15pm and three crew members went ashore with full medical kits, where they were assisted by Birling Gap Coastguards. By the time the Coastguard rescue helicopter arrived, the casualty was conscious and waving.
After being given first aid, the man was winched into the helicopter and flown to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, where his condition is unknown.
Second Coxswain, Lee Blacknell said, “With much of the chalk cliffs crumbling, please stay well away from the cliff edge for your own safety. Our thoughts are with the casualty and his family; we wish him a speedy recovery.”
