The tennis eyes return their eyes to Eastbourne’s Johanna Konta this weekend, as she joins Great Britain’s Fed Cup team.
The British No. 2 Heather Watson is out first for the Aegon GB Team against Romania’s Simona Halep in the crucial World Group II play-off, which will take place in the Black Sea resort of Constanta.
Following Heather will be World No. 7 and British No. 1, Johanna Konta against Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu in the second singles rubber today (22 April), as GB captain Anne Keothavong looks to lead her team to the World Group II for the first time in 24 years.
Tomorrow is slated to see the singles rubbers reversed, with Johanna taking on Halep and Heather then facing Begu, before a doubles clash between Britain’s Laura Robson and Jocelyn Rae and Romania’s pairing of Sorana Cirstea and Monica Niculescu.
Britain have been in scintillating form so far in this year’s Fed Cup competition, sweeping through their Euro/Africa Zone I pool stage before defeating Croatia in the zonal play-off.
They face a Romania team who fell to Belgium in the World Group II first round, forcing them into a play-off with Britain for the right to stay in the Fed Cup’s elite group of nations.
Britain last competed at World Group level in 1993 but have been in play-offs to return in 2012 and 2013. With Johanna in such fine form after her victory at the Miami Open, and Heather, Laura and Jocelyn raising their levels for Fed Cup action, there is real hope the team can overcome the odds and win away from home this weekend.
