Eastbourne & District Indoor Bowls Finals

The 39th running of the Club Finals of Eastbourne & District Indoor Bowls Club took place over the weekend. 

Played on Saturday morning (22 April), the Mens Novice Singles was won by John Cable, who found form at the right time, beating Nigel Morris 21-4. 

The Mens Senior Pairs saw Peter Reynolds and Terry Howard matched against Doug Roderick and Dave Buttle.  At 10 ends the score was 8-7 in favour of Peter and Terry. By the 18th end the lead extended to 15-9 and despite a spirited effort by their opponents ran out winners 16-14.  

The Ladies Pairs was contested between Sheila Morris partnered with Pat Bain and Annie-France Jackson partnered with Jean Clements.  Early exchanges were even but Sheila and Pat then pulled away to win 26-6.   Ion the afternoon, playing their second finals of the day, Peter, his daughter Julie Woods and Mike Taylor played Pat, her husband David and son Stephen in the Mixed Triples. It was the Bain family team which ran out deserved winners by 23 shots to 11. 

On the next rink, Nigel played his second final, with team mates Simon Perry and Dave Buttle contesting the Mens Triples final against John Cable, Roger Cable and skipped by Competition Secretary Bill Fuller.  On this occasion Nigel emerged on the winning side 19-9. 

The Ladies Triples was contested by Pat White, Pauline Davies and Anne Summers against Tracey Racher, Pauline Bessell and Sheila Palin.  After a close fought match which went the full distance it was Sheila’s team who emerged victorious by 19 shots to 17. 

In the evening, Sheila Morris and Mike Taylor each played their second finals of the day against Paddy Kervin and Bill Fuller, who was also playing his second.  Sheila and Mike were victorious by 24-8 including a ‘full house’. 

On Sunday morning the Ladies drawn fours final took place between  Sue Morris, Rosemary Burgin, Lynne Garrett, Mandy Dow (Skip) and Annie-France Jackson, Christine Dodd, Pat Nicholls and Pauline Bessell (Skip).   The game was very even with both sides winning 10 ends and the other tied! 

It was Mandy’s team that prevailed winning 16-13.   In the Mens fours yet another close game went all the way and it was Dave Webber, Doug Roderick, Mike Taylor and Stephen Bain who triumphed over Peter Reynols, John Brady, Keiron Packham and Terry Howard, picking up 3 on the last end to win 21-16. 

In the afternoon, the Mens Pairs was Doug Roderick and Terry Howard against Nigel Morris and Simon Perry.  Nigel and Simon led 15-8 after 14 ends but didn’t score again and the title went to Doug and Terry 19-15.

The Ladies Junior Singles was between Liz Parks and Jean Clements and it was Jean who came out on top 21-10.   The Ladies Singles title was contested by 16 times champion Pat Bain and Pat White.  Retaining her title, which she first won 30 years ago, it was Pat Bain who won 21-3. 

The Mens Singles saw a rematch between last years finalists Peter Reynolds and Jamie White. The game was an exhibition, with both players playing exceptional shots and Peter with a front toucher retained his title by the same score as the previous year 21-19.  Trophies were presented by Club President Sheila Simmons.
