We’re being asked not to be alarmed if we see squirrels sitting at the top of lamp posts or on roofs for hours on end in Eastbourne.
East Sussex Wildlife Rescue and Ambulance Service say this is perfectly normal behaviour at this time of year for young squirrels. It can be a case of them venturing out into the world on their own and coming across frightening experiences such as other animals, cars and people.
This can prompt them to climb up the nearest high object, such as a telegraph pole and sit there for 12-48 hours. The squirrels may make various defensive noises whilst scared, but this doesn’t mean they are in pain or distress.
WRAS says the best thing to do is to leave them be and they will normally come down of their own accord when the coast is clear.
