After complaints were made about the latest round of gold paint to adorn Eastbourne Pier, its larger-than-life owner, wants to know what the public thinks.
Earlier this year, Sheikh Abid Gulzar was granted permission from the Borough Council to paint the last two remaining domes – which are scalloped in design – gold, to match the others on the landmark, which had already been painted his favourite colour.
However, he told Eastbourne Buzz that the work was carried out whilst he was in hospital with kidney stones, and his assistant was away. During this time, the workmen believed the job included all of the scalloped design and so painted the base of the two domes, as well as part of one of the pavilion roofs.
Now, having been scolded by the council for carrying out the work, Mr Gulzar, who believes he has done nothing wrong, has painted one of the scalloped roofs silver and wants to hear from the public as to which they prefer – gold or silver – whilst discussions with Town Hall continue into the matter.
