A minute’s silence was observed at Arlington Stadium last night (17 June) in honour of those who died in the Grenfell Tower fire in London, ahead of the Eastbourne Eagles’ National League match with the Belle Vue Colts.
The Eagles swooped to victory 53-37 and were buoyed by the return of Jake Knight who raced to a sparkling 15-point maximum.
Captain Georgie Wood and Mark Baseby were the other rocks on which the victory was built.
Wood was only one point shy of a maximum and Baseby won his first four races in class style before falling in heat 15.
Eastbourne team manager Connor Dugard said it was a brilliant team performance from Eastbourne, “It was a fantastic night, really good. Mark Baseby is on fire, as is Jake Knight. The whole team is getting going.”
Knight’s big points scores in his first two meetings have helped power Eastbourne to a draw at defending champions Birmingham and now a victory over the table-topping Colts.
Dugard commented: “To get 28 points from two meetings is a pretty big success story. Jake’s speed tonight was unbelievable. Even if he doesn’t make the start, he shows some real aggression and I can see why some Championship clubs have tried to sign him. He has turned them down because he wants to focus on us at the moment.”
