Eastbourne is to host alfresco Shakespeare performances this summer.
In the year of the 400th anniversary of the bard’s death, one of his plays will be brought to life in the secluded Italian Gardens, at Holywell.
Eastbourne Dramatic and Operatic Society will be recreating As You Like It in the amphitheatre, carved out of Beachy Head’s white chalk, from 27 July to 6 August.
Eastbourne Borough Council Lead Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Enterprise, Cllr Margaret Bannister said “Mid-summer evenings should be spent in the Italian Gardens located at the foot of the South Downs National Park and often referred to as Eastbourne’s best kept secret.”
“I highly encourage holiday-makers to come along and absorb culture, striking natural beauty and an enchanting atmosphere in the gardens which offer undercover seating or a grassed area ideal for setting up a picnic and taking in all the action from the ‘front-row’.”
