Eastbourne and Willingdon MP Caroline Ansell has thrown her support behind the completion of an English coastal path by 2020 after meeting with environment minister Rory Stewart.

The route – the longest in the world of its kind – is set to go through Eastbourne and take in local sites like Beachy Head and will be a boost to tourism.

Crucially, plans for the path also include access remaining even if there is a cliff collapse similar to one recently, with the right of way moving back with time and erosion.

Caroline is now going to discuss the plan with Natural England, which is the agency delivering the 2,795-mile path, with a view to supporting it in Parliament.

“This is a very exciting initiative that will allow the largest continuous coastal path to pass through our town and the hope is it will bring more visitors to Eastbourne,” said Caroline.

“There are concerns about making sure that access is safe and landowners are happy with the arrangements, and I know that Natural England is very sensitive to ensuring that all local interests are acknowledged.

“We have some beautiful and world famous scenery just on our doorstep and I think that anything that opens it up to more people can only be welcomed.

“I spoke at length to Rory about the path and I will be doing my best to support it in Parliament and also by liaising with Natural England to ensure it’s a success.”
