Polegate MP, Maria Caulfield, has welcomed a further fall in unemployment figures across the UK and her constituency of Lewes.
Official figures show that nationally unemployment fell by 64,000 to 1.49 million in the three months to May. It meant the unemployment rate fell to its lowest since 1975, at 4.5%, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) added. Locally unemployed claimants in Lewes constituency in June 2017 was 570, down from 1,270 in 2010. 570 claimants represent just 1.4% of the economically active population aged between 16 and 64.
Maria said, “The number of claimants of working aged benefits continues to fall in Lewes, showing that more people are in work, paying taxes and boosting the local economy.
“Out of 650 constituencies Lewes is now ranked 493rd for working aged benefit claimants, where 650 is the lowest number of claimants. I will continue to support businesses and regeneration efforts in the constituency to help get more people into work.”
