Polegate MP Maria Caulfield has given her support to Guide Dogs’ campaign to end pavement parking.

Cars parked on the pavement pose a dangerous obstacle for blind and partially sighted people, often meaning that they must walk out into the road to avoid the parked car.

Under current laws councils must use a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to prohibit parking in certain places. Each TRO, including consultations, newspaper adverts and signage can cost councils between £1000 and £3000. This would be very expensive for local councils to implement across large areas.

Maria said, “People may think that it is fine to park on the pavement to allow cars more room to pass but they are creating a dangerous problem for those with sight impairments by forcing them into the road.

“Guide Dogs’ statistics show that 90% of people with sight loss frequently have problems with parked cars on the pavement. It is dangerous that partially sighted and blind people are being forced into potentially busy roads because cars are parked in their way. This is why I am supporting Guide Dogs in their campaign to outlaw pavement parking.”
