Nutley 4-3 Eastbourne Rangers
In a well contested game at Nutley, the Rangers first team frustratingly lost out on their travels.
Rangers started well and found themselves 1 up after Just 6 minutes when Adam Sparks acrobatically slammed home a Ben Jesson cross into the roof of the net.
Sixteen minutes later, Kent Meier rifled home a rasping right footed volley from the edge of the box to put Rangers in the driving seat.
Rangers then hit the bar through a Luke Regan effort and then bizarrely had the referee wave away a stone wall penalty after the Nutley defender had clearly handled the ball in the area.
Seven minutes before the break, Nutley got back into the game when a free-kick was floated into the Rangers box which debutant Syimyk Kyshtoobaev could only parry a Nutley header into the path of a waiting striker who tucked the ball away from close range.
Nutley approached the second half with a reshuffled pack and were on top in the early exchanges. But it was Josh Harris, who was a menace all afternoon, who extended Rangers lead after some neat footwork saw him create space on the edge on the box, with his strike far too good for the home keeper who had to watch the ball nestle in the bottom corner.
Win 20 minutes left on the clock, Rangers lost the irrepressible Karl Funnell and Meier through injury which sparked a crazy 10 minute period where Rangers imploded, not helped by some quite astonishing decisions by the man in the middle, but the less said about those the better!!
Nutley hit 3 goals in a quickfire seven minutes which visibly knocked the stuffing out of Rangers and despite the away side creating a few chances to equalise, the home team held out in what was a well contested, but frustrating game.
A strong first half performance was ultimately cancelled out by an indifferent second half display, and despite some decent overall performances particularly in the middle of the park, the Old Dave's Gourmet Burgers MOM was awarded to Josh Harris who clearly gives the team an extra dimension up front.
Eastbourne Rangers Res 4-2 Copthorne III
Our reserve team finally got their season up and running with a well deserved home victory against Copthorne III.
Joe Horton gave the red and blacks an early lead only for the away side to cancel it out soon after. Jules Waters then stuck the ball in his own net which gave the visitors a half time advantage.
But Copthorne quickly returned the favour by scoring an own goal of their own for 2-2 and then goals by Charlie Shearing and another from Horton sealed a well overdue win for the boys.
The Old Dave's Gourmet Burgers MOM was awarded to Joe Horton, who just shaded out Dave Bennett-Tomlin.
