A record number of school children will be taking part in Safety In Action in Eastbourne this week (9-13 October).
1000 youngsters from Year 6 will join in the event at Devonshire Park Tennis Centre to learn about some of the dangers they may face as they become more independent and prepare for transition to secondary school.
Co-ordinated by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, the partnership project also involves Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance, Eastbourne Volunteer Lifeguards, Southern Rail, School Health (NHS), Eastbourne Borough Council and UK Power networks.
A number of scenarios are set up by the different organisations, designed to simulate and provide information about a variety of topics such as road safety and personal safety, dealing with a casualty, reporting a fire and keeping safe, safety on the streets, safety near the railway, water safety, alcohol safety and electrical safety.
David Kemp, head of Community Safety at East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said,
“One of the most important aspects of Safety in Action is that it encourages children to think about things for themselves. They are actively involved in discussing the situations they may face and what options they have. This helps them develop their decision-making skills and better equip them to deal with problems they will encounter as they grow up. This work is only possible because of the commitment made by the different organisations involved and we are pleased to see so many of our partners return for 2018.
“This year Safety in Action won the Gold award for the best Fire and Rescue Project in the annual Improvement & Efficiency Awards (iESE), which are open to any public body in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
“We are proud that this award-winning educational event has gained such fantastic feedback from both staff and pupils, who benefit from these life-saving activities, and delighted to be offering the event once again to those youngsters who live in our Service area.”
