East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is supporting Older People's Day today (1 October).
The service believes it’s a great opportunity to highlight the issues and challenges of ageing in today’s world as well as recognising the wonderful contribution that older people make to our local society.
Statistics show older people are at greater risk of fire injury or death - this risk can be reduced. In England for 2015-16, 52% of fire related fatalities in dwelling fires were over 65 years old and in the UK statistically the risk of dying in a fire if you are aged over 65 is twice as high as the average risk for all other age groups.
They’re encouraging older people to take advantage of their free Home Safety Visits, which will see safety advice given, smoke alarms checked and it is a chance to discuss specialist equipment.
If you know of anyone who may benefit from a free home safety visit please call: 0800 177 7069.
