Eastbourne's getting ready for a visit from Avenue Q at The Congress Theatre.
Eastbourne Buzz caught up with Kate Monster (pictured) ahead of their visit:
Why should people ‘visit’ Avenue Q?
Avenue Q is hilarious, naughty, high energy, warm-hearted and completely unique. It’s a brilliant story about growing up, dreaming big, and finding your purpose in life. It’s full of brilliant characters, puppet and human, and we guarantee you will leave the theatre with a smile on your face and a skip in your step!
This is all about growing up and finding your way in life. What did you want to be when you were a child?
For a long time, I dreamed of being a Celine Dion impersonator, but eventually I came to realise that we don’t really share all the same physical attributes. She has legs for example. But my real dream is to run a Kindergarten school attended by all the young Monsters of New York!
What’s your favourite part of the show?
My favourite part of the show is a song I sing called ‘There’s a Fine, Fine Line’. It’s a very emotional song about how it’s sometimes a very fine line between being in love and being friends with somebody. It has some very high notes so I have to keep my emotions under control so I can hit them!
What’s the best thing about being you?
The best thing about being me is getting to live on the same street as all your best friends! The worst thing about being me is how often I have a bad hair day, or bad fur day to be precise! It really does get everywhere. I always do a quick whip around with a lint roller before heading on stage.
Do you have any famous relatives?
I’m actually related to Animal from the Muppets! He’s a third cousin or something. We’ve met a couple of times, and once I got to go on set at one of their films. Kermit is such a dish!
You’re coming to Eastbourne soon, what are you looking forward to about the visit?
Being on tour, it’s really fun to see all the amazing things England has to offer. Countryside, sheep, fish and chips, tea, rail replacement bus services… and now we’re about to arrive in glorious Eastbourne! We can’t wait to check out the sunshine coast and take a walk along Beachy Head. Here’s hoping we don’t get caught in any gusty winds.”
Is it hard being on the road, having to live and work with everyone every day?
We get on so well! Trekkie Monster can be very very messy, but luckily I don’t have to share a dressing room with him. And I don’t think it’s any secret to say that Princeton and I have had a special connection ever since he moved onto the street! He can be a bit dopey at times, but he made me a mix tape once and I think that’s possibly the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me. Ever. Although the tracks he chose are very confusing – ‘My Heart Will Go On’… the theme tune from ‘Friends’… I’m not sure what he’s trying to tell me!
Avenue Q is at Eastbourne Congress Theatre from Tuesday 5 – Saturday 9 July. For more information and tickets click here.
