The Devonshire Park Theatre is the perfect setting for Noël Coward’s classic comedy Blithe Spirit which comes to the Victorian playhouse this summer from 12 - 16 July.
Undoubtedly one of Coward’s theatrical masterpieces this delightful comedy of manners follows the cantankerous novelist Charles Condomine who invites the eccentric, and brilliantly crafted character, Madame Arcati to conduct a séance in the hope of gathering material for his next book.
However, the scheme backfires magnificently when Charles suddenly finds himself face to face with the ghost of his deceased first wife Elvira, much to the annoyance of his current spouse Ruth.
Elvira, who died seven years earlier, is the total opposite to the straight laced and rational Ruth; she is louche, temperamental and moody, she both flirts and taunts Charles who is the only one that can see and hear this Blithe Spirit. Ruth doesn’t believe that the ghost is there, until she is handed a vase supported by thin air. Of course mayhem ensues in this improbable farce that still startles and delights.
The cast includes Oliver Mellor (Coronation Street), Anna Brecon (Emmerdale) and Michelle Morris (The Knock) with Judy Buxton (On the Up) as Madame Arcati.
