The Aegon International legends event returns for 2016 with Jana Novotna, Rennae Stubbs, Pat Cash and Jeremy Bates taking to the Devonshire Park courts on tomorrow (June 24) and Saturday (June 25).
The Aegon International champion in 1998, Novotna also reached three semifinals and two quarterfinals in singles and won four doubles titles from a phenomenal eight final showings at Devonshire Park during her career. The 1998 Wimbledon champion said she was excited to return to Eastbourne, scene of some of her most memorable career victories.
“The atmosphere at Eastbourne is something I will always remember,” said Novotna. “The fans were so loyal and supportive and it was always one of my favourite stops on the tour.”
Stubbs, a five-time Grand Slam doubles champion, has also enjoyed much success at Eastbourne, appearing in eight finals and winning four of them. “The courts at Devonshire Park as some of the best grass courts in the world and I can’t wait to get out there and have some fun with Pat, Jana and Jeremy,” she said.
The 1987 Wimbledon champion and former world No.4 Cash said: “It’s always fun to get back out on the court and I’m going to be in great company with three of the most accomplished grass court players in history.”
Wimbledon mixed doubles champion in 1987, Bates also looked forward to returning to action at Devonshire Park. “I was part of some great Davis Cup ties in Eastbourne over the years, the Centre Court there holds great memories for me,” said the former British No.1. “The Eastbourne fans really appreciate their tennis and I think we’re all looking forward to playing a couple of great matches for them.”
Aegon International Eastbourne Tournament Director, Gavin Fletcher, said: “The legends event is always a highlight here in Eastbourne which is why we’ve decided to extend it across two days this year. We’ve got another strong line-up in Cash, Bates, Stubbs and Novotna and I know the fans are going to be out in force to watch them dust off their racquets and find their feet on the grass courts again.”
Now a traditional feature at the Aegon International, Friday’s legend’s mixed doubles match will take place on Court No.1, with tickets selling fast for what is semi-finals day at the Aegon International. Saturday’s legends mixed doubles scheduled to take place on Centre Court at 12-noon.
