Hundreds of schoolchildren are descending on Herstmonceux Castle this week (27 June - 1 July).

They’re taking part in Wealden District Council’s Safety in Action event, which aims at helping keep them safe as they grow up.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is one of several organisations involved in the partnership project, which has been running for 25 years.

David Kemp from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said, “Safety in Action has always given us a brilliant opportunity to speak to children who are about to head into secondary school and face a whole new set of challenges. They are learning about how to be independent and we want to help equip them with the skills they need to stay safe. We teach them about fire safety and other organisations bring their knowledge and expertise to create a lively and exciting event for the children.”

This year there is a special focus on water safety, with a session from Freedom Leisure. Other topics include farm and countryside safety delivered by Wealden District Council, dealing with an accident delivered by South East Coast Ambulance and road safety delivered by Sussex Police. UK Power Networks will teach electrical safety and Southern Railway about railway safety.
