Police successfully detained two suspected thieves following a high-speed pursuit between Polegate and Eastbourne which began at around 4.20pm on Thursday (7 July).
An officer at the Roads Policing Unit base in Gilda Crescent, Polegate, noticed two men loading a moped into a small white van in the adjacent railway station car park and immediately became suspicious.
He and other traffic officers tried to stop the van in High Street, Polegate, but it made off at speed, taking the A2270 Willingdon Road towards Eastbourne.
Travelling at speeds up to 70mph, swerving onto the wrong side of traffic islands and forcing other traffic to get out of the way the van, believed to have been stolen, was pursued via the King's Drive roundabout onto Cross Levels Way.
En route, it briefly stopped and reversed into a following patrol car, causing minor injuries to an officer, and was involved in glancing collisions with two other vehicles.
At the top of Lottbridge Drove it swerved into a patrol car attempting to overtake it but was itself forced onto the verge. Two men inside the van ran off as it came to a halt but were quickly detained by officers nearby.
Inside the van various items of stolen property were discovered, including items believed to have been stolen from the South Downs College, Eastbourne.
Anyone who witnessed any elements of the pursuit or the collisions which occurred is asked to email firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 101, quoting serial 1082 of 07/07.
